POSITION: Utility Lineman
SALARY: $62.17 – $65.96/hourly [Union Position Hiring range – Step 1-3]
The City of Unalaska is accepting applications for the Utility Lineman position. Located in the number one commercial fishing port in the United States, the International Port of Dutch Harbor, Unalaska, Alaska, is a coastal community in the Eastern Aleutian Islands with a multi-cultural population of approximately 4,250 full-time residents and seasonal influxes from multiple commercial fishery operations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This position functions as a journeyman-level lineman who, under direct supervision from the Utility Lineman Chief, ensures electricity is delivered to the City of Unalaska consumers. Some examples of work performed but not limited to installing and repairing electrical transmission, distribution lines, secondary feeders, and service drops. Inspects electrical systems and equipment. Installs and repairs transformers, primary and secondary vaults, switching stations, section cans, and primary and secondary underground lines. Install and pull conductors through electrical conduit. Performs cable splices and terminations on wire and cables up to 34,500 volts. Tests continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard instruments. Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Working knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade. Must have the ability to work from sketches, blueprints, and manuals. Have the ability to operate mechanized equipment, make mathematical computations, and ability to work under time constraints. Working knowledge of high voltage testers, pinpointers, high pot machines, meggers, and phase rotation meters. Can read one-line diagrams, blueprints, and schematics to accomplish duties. Must possess the ability to follow standard safety practices. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to maintain productive working relationships.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
> High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
> Completion of a four-year electrical apprentice program is required
LICENCES & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
> Journeyman Lineman Certificate of Fitness from the State of Alaska or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire
> Required to have, or be able to obtain, an Alaska CDL Class “B” within 90 days of hire
> Ability to pass all required pre-employment testing, i.e., criminal background and work history and a drug test. Subject to future random testing without notice.
> Must be eligible to work in the US; meet employment requirements by Federal Law; if hired, must complete employment eligibility verification form (I-9).
> Willingness to work outside and around high voltage is required
> Ability to work nontraditional hours if necessary
> Maintain active and current certifications and licensing for the duration of employment
